With a population of just under 10,000, Independence offers new ER medical facilities, new and recently renovated schools, a two-year community college, several four-year colleges within driving distance, numerous cultural offerings locally and in the nearby region, top-notch tennis* and golf programs and facilities, plus wide-ranging boating, fishing, hiking and hunting opportunities. (The US Tennis Association selected Independence one of the nation's top three best tennis towns!) The metropolitan areas of Kansas City, Wichita, Tulsa, OK, and Joplin, MO are only an hour or two of open/uncongested/scenic driving!
